Backpacks
Organize backpack size, persistence, and interface settings.

What you can configure
Give Rust players extra inventory space with permission-based capacity, death rules and optional item restrictions.
Edit Backpacks.json: slot counts, size profiles, death/wipe rules, item restrictions and the built-in backpack interface. Player contents and earned capacity are separate data, not editable here.
Start with an 18-slot backpack
- Set Backpack size → Default size to 18; keep Max size per page at 48 and Dynamic Size (EXPERIMENTAL) disabled.
- After installing the exported file, grant backpacks.use to the intended group. Grant backpacks.gui separately if you want the enabled GUI button.
- Reload Backpacks and test /backpack with an ordinary player without another size permission.
Higher size permissions or an enabled dynamic profile can change the result. Editing JSON does not grant permissions.
Drop contents on death instead of erasing them
- Set Drop on Death (true/false) to true and Erase on Death (true/false) to false.
- Keep Minimum Despawn Time (Seconds) at 300 as a starting point; review backpacks.keepondeath grants for intentional exemptions.
- On a test server, place a disposable item in the backpack and check death, recovery and despawn with a non-exempt player.
Erase on Death takes precedence when both switches are true. Keep-on-death permission exempts the player from both behaviors.
Common questions
Why does a player have a different backpack size?
The highest granted backpacks.size.<slots> value overrides the default. With dynamic size enabled, a granted size profile takes priority over fixed sizes; multiple profiles use the highest initial and maximum capacities.
Does exporting clear backpacks or install the plugin?
No. Export downloads configuration only. You can apply it manually or send it over SFTP to your connected server. Installing the plugin is a separate action. Clear on wipe is disabled in the pinned default; enabling it changes future server wipe behavior, subject to configured rules and permissions.
Before you export
- This configurator targets the reviewed Oxide 3.17.8 contract. Its configuration, language messages and permissions are unchanged from 3.17.6. Carbon and other Rust builds need separate verification.
- A page holds at most 48 slots. Dynamic capacity is experimental and requires separate upgrade integrations.
- Backpack contents, preferences and earned capacity are outside Backpacks.json. Its Rust UI is not a PimpMyCUI document.
